Today, let’s look at a QR code on the back of a kids book that Chick-Fil-A includes with their kids meals.  It is 1 inch square and includes a URL (although not the encoded URL).

The encoded data is a URL: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/martha-speaks-story-maker/id556624499?mt=8

What We Can Learn

Chick-Fil-A does a fantastic job with the material they include in the kids meals and this time was no exception.  The QR code sends users to the iTunes to download a story maker that costs $1.99.  If you visit link that is printed to the right of the QR code, pbskids.org/martha/stories, on you smart phone, you are taken to a well designed, mobile friendly page.

As you can see, the URL and call to action should work together but they don’t have to forward the user to the same place.  Also, by working with PBS Kids, Chick-Fil-A delegates the responsibility of a mobile friendly page to their partner.  For small businesses, that means you can work together with another business and promote their products and services using your advertising, products, and QR codes.

From a user’s perspective, the QR code can easily be scanned after reading the book or other times.  It is important to understand what a user will be doing when they encounter your QR code.  You don’t want your QR code to be on a billboard that prospective customers are passing at high speeds.  Ideally, you want the user to find your QR code at just the right time; when they have their smart phone to scan the code and when they are prepared to take advantage of your offer.

Summary

When making your own QR codes, keep the following in mind:

  • Working with a partner can be a win-win situation for both parties
  • A QR code is much more effective when it is in the right spot and it is found at the right time
  • Be sure to incorporate your call to action into the overall design of the advertising when possible
